How will martial arts benefit my family?

Our programs have been recommended by local pediatricians to improve children's self-esteem, focus/concentration, positive attitude, respect, listening skills, and confidence. We are a very positive school, and we love to encourage students to success! We regularly work with ADD/ADHD children as well as very shy children that may need a boost of confidence! We love working with all children!

How old do you need to be in order to take class?

We offer classes starting at age 4. We also offer classes for adults and every age in between. Our student population is mainly made up of families. Most of our adult students are the parents of the children that take class (many in their 30s, 40s, and 50s). It is a lot of fun (and great exercise!) to take class as a family.

Do you offer family classes?

We offer classes for children starting at age 4, and also family classes where Mom & Dad may take class with their children. All classes are very safe and students may work at their own pace (in other words...all fitness levels are welcome!)

How much does it cost?

We are currently offering a 2 Week Trial Membership for $25. It is 2 weeks of lessons and includes a new uniform (normally $42) at no charge. It is a great way try out classes firsthand and make sure that it is a great match for your family! When you come in for your first lesson we will also go over the complete schedules and rates. There are a few different programs and ways to get started, but on average it is about $10/class for students to take classes at MAA. Call the nearest location or simply fill out the 2 Week Trial Membership Registration Form.

How do you tie your karate belt?

I'm afraid my child may become aggressive or use martial arts for fighting...

We have strict rules about when a student may use their martial arts skills. Our experience shows that when children watch martial arts on TV, they "play" karate because they are excited by it, but don't really understand it. When they actually become a real martial arts student and take a real martial arts class, they begin to have respect for it. Our experience shows that when children learn martial arts, they actually develop more self-control. We have had very few problems over the years with student's misusing martial arts.

What are the different styles of martial arts, and which one is best?

The style of martial art tells you where it originated from and what techniques they practice. This is simply the physical curriculum that they are going to learn. An even better question that a parent might ask is, "What will my child really be learning in classes?" At Martial Arts America, we feel that developing life skills is even more important than developing a perfect roundhouse kick...we use our martial arts curriculum simply as a tool to develop life skills in your child like respect, honesty, perseverance, teamwork, and self-control.

Do you have to compete at Martial Arts America?

Our school is a non-competitive school. We are more focused on helping children become their best rather than be concerned about who is the best. Over the years we have learned that a better way to develop the self-esteem of children is not to compare them with others, but rather provide opportunities for them to challenge themselves and grow on a personal level. Many children get the wrong idea about competing...for many children it can even be detrimental to their self-esteem and growth as a person.

As a side benefit, without competing it also helps us keep costs of participating down for families, and allows for less time commitment. Most families are very busy. We find that when students have a balanced schedule of family time, homework, social time, and martial arts...they stay in classes for a lot longer and get lot more out of it. It is not uncommon for us to have students start at age 4, 5, or 6 and stay with us through high school!
